Such markings relay adherence to the minimum requirements laid out in the ANSI Z87.1 standard. Marking specifications are outlined in ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2020, but this document covers a range of information, setting forth criteria related to the requirements, testing, permanent marking, selection, care, and use of protectors to minimize the occurrence and severity or prevention of injuries.

These injuries include impact, non-ionizing radiation and liquid splash exposures in occupational and educational environments such as machinery operations, material welding and cutting, chemical handling, and assembly operations. Please note, however, that ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2020 does not cover other hazardous exposures like bloodborne pathogens, X-rays, high-energy particulate radiation, microwaves, radio-frequency radiation, lasers, masers, and sports and recreation.

As a performance-oriented standard, ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2020 requirements apply to protectors when first placed in service. This way, protectors bearing the permanent marking Z87 meet all applicable requirements of this standard in its entirety.

The Ansi Z871 Standard

ANSI/ISEA Z87.1:2020, an American National Standard, helps eliminate eye and face hazards in occupational and educational settings. To accomplish this objective, the standard provides criteria and requirements for selection, use, and maintenance of the different face and eye protectors to promote the most effective materials and methods of use.

This standard can find usage in a variety of environments, including machinery operations, material welding and cutting, chemical handling, and assembly operations, as well as many others.

Please note, however, that ANSI/ISEA Z87.1:2020 does not include certain hazardous exposures like bloodborne pathogens, X-rays, high-energy particulate radiation, microwaves, radio-frequency radiation, lasers, masers, and sports and recreation.

This standard should be applied when the equipment is first placed in service, so that any applicable protectors will be stamped with the marking Z87 to demonstrate that the meet the minimum guidelines laid out in the standard. Examples of these apparatuses include face shields and chin protectors.

Those who make use of this standard often pair its requirements with that of other essential documents. For example, ANSI Z87.1 is often used alongside ANSI Z358.1, the standard for emergency eyewashes and shower equipment. These standards are available together as the ANSI/ISEA Z358.1 / ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 Eyewash and Eye Protection Package.

What is ANSI?

The American National Standards Institute is a private non-profit organization that oversees and grants accreditation to standards committees and projects. These conformity standards are voluntary and must be updated at least every five years to remain current. ANSI represents the United States in the International Organization for Standardization or ISO.

How does eyewear meet the ANSI Z87 standard?

ANSI Z87.1 prescription safety glasses must pass an impact test. Eyewear that meets this standard may also protect eyes from droplets or splashes and dust. A D3 marking indicates protection from droplets and splashes. Eyewear rated D4 protects eyes from dust, and a D5 rating is for fine dust.

What do the other markings on eyewear and lenses mean?

In addition to the Z87, Z87+ and D ratings, safety eyewear may have other markings. Markings of W, U, R, L, V or S indicate protection from different types of optical radiation. Impact-rated ANSI prescription safety glasses may be marked with Z87-2+ on the frame and a plus symbol on lenses.

How does ANSI Z87.1 compare to other safety standards?

The ANSI Z87.1 standard is referenced in the 29 CFR 1910.133 federal standard set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in the United States. The Z87.1 standard also overlaps with the International Safety Equipment Association Standard. The European personal eye protection standard is EN 166.

    Changes To Ansi/isea Z871

The standard for eye and face protection effectively protects personnel by remaining current. The 2010 revision of this standard was monumental, and the 2015 revision continued this trend by addressing issues with emerging technologies.

Over the past five years, various innovations in product design needed to be addressed by this standard, which continues to focus on product performance and harmonize with international standards. Due to this, ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2020 underwent the following changes from the 2015 edition:

    • Criteria and requisite markings for protectors offering relaxed optics were added as an option to long-standing requirements. This in response to the recognition that certain job tasks and applications, including those of first-responder, firefighting or military personnel, may not need require the stringent optical criteria historically imposed.
    • Testing, performance, and marking criteria for lenses with anti-fog properties were added, since fogging can impede a wearers ability to perform work safely.
    • Transmittance allowances were changed.
    • Welding filter shades were expanded.
    • Clarifications were added to provide consistency in testing for applying dark-state tolerances for automatic darkening welding filters and determining the minimum cover-age area with respect to the specified headform.

    Importance Of Testing And Hazards

Our eyes are critical to our everyday experience and allow us to interact with the world around us. They enable our sense of sight and are essential in identifying friends or foes, human emotions, health and danger issues, and so much more. However, the unfortunate reality is that many hardworking people will lose their sight due to workplace injuries. The most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that over 2,000 eye injuries happen every day. Even injuries that are considered minor can cause pain, the inability to report to work, and lifelong vision problems.

ANSI Z87 touches on the importance of conducting regular eye and face hazard assessments. Many worksites have simultaneous exposures to hazards, which means a thorough hazard evaluation is required before deciding. Regularly revisiting and reassessing the threats will ensure the most appropriate PPE is being used. Here are a couple of links to selection guides provided by ISEA and OSHA:

Face Shields are typically worn in hot environments, where splashing molten metal is a concern.

    • Impact Chipping, drilling, hammering, grinding, metalworking, sanding, and sawing pose dangers of chips, flying particles, metal, and other materials being thrown into the air. All of MCR Safety’s glasses are tested to the high-impact standard, offering users peace of mind when wearing MCR Safety glasses.

Flying particles are always a concern in manufacturing operations.
