Va Disability Benefits For Eye Floaters

Optometry Services and How to Schedule VA Appointments | Department of Veterans Affairs | theSITREP

Eye floaters are a common visual complaint that arent always linked to an eye condition or injury. Floaters appear as lines or dark spots in the field of vision and occur when strands of vitreous fluid clump together. This then casts shadows on the retina.

Some people may have larger quantities of eye floaters in their vision as a result of vitreous detachment. The VA may consider vitreous detachment when rating eye conditions, so be sure to discuss your symptoms with a medical professional. Keep in mind that a sudden increase in floaters could be a sign of a retinal tear or detachment, which require immediate medical attention to prevent vision loss.

Va Disability Benefits For Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a broad term for a group of eye conditions that cause optic nerve damage. This nerve damage typically occurs due to high eye pressure. Glaucoma is one of the top causes of blindness for people over 60. The VA rates both angle-closure glaucoma and open-angle glaucoma under the General Rating Formula for Diseases of the Eye, and your rating will depend on the severity and stage of your glaucoma. We will cover VA ratings for eye conditions in more detail below.

When Do VA Disability Ratings Become Permanent?

Are those fashion-forward, far-from-budget-busting specs you bought online good for your eyes?

Unfortunately, the answer is not cut and dried. It really depends on your prescription, your expectations and how you use your glasses, says Dr. Justin Bazan, O.D., an eyewear industry consultant and owner of Park Slope Eyewear in Brooklyn, New York.

If you have a complicated prescription, for example, you might not want to buy them from an online eyewear retailer.

Why not?

The more complicated the prescription, the more important it is to work with an eye care professional, not only for proper frame selection but also for proper measurements, adjustments of the frame and verification that it was made correctly, Dr. Bazan says.

Let’s look at when buying glasses online makes sense and when it’s best to get your specs closer to home from your trusted eye doctor or vision center.

Can Veterans Get Glasses And Hearing Aids From The Va

Are you a veteran in need of glasses or hearing aids? Did you know that in many cases the VA will provide glasses and hearing aids as well as examinations for free?

Here is a list of the eligibility requirements for VA provided vision and hearing care:

  • Veterans with any compensable service-connected disability.
  • Former Prisoners of War.
  • Purple Heart recipients.
  • Veterans who are qualified for an increased pension based on being permanently housebound and in need of regular aid and attendance.
  • Veterans with vision or hearing impairment resulting from diseases or the existence of another medical condition for which they are getting care or services from the VA.
  • Veterans with significant functional or cognitive impairment that keeps them from performing the activities of daily living.
  • Veterans with vision and/or hearing impairment severe enough that it interferes with their ability to participate actively in their own medical treatment.
  • Veterans who have service-connected vision disabilities rated zero percent or service-connected hearing disabilities rated zero percent if there is organic conductive, mixed, or sensory hearing impairment, and loss of pure tone hearing sensitivity in the low, mid, or high-frequency range or a combination of frequency ranges which contribute to a loss of communication ability however, hearing aids are to be provided only as needed for the service-connected hearing disability.

Verify Your Prescription Before Shopping Online

The tricky part is making sure the eyewear you receive is the right prescription, says Michael Repka, M.D., spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology and professor of ophthalmology at Johns Hopkins University.

Technically the only way to do this is with a lensometer , and some experts say it is an absolute must to have the glasses checked with one prior to wearing them.

Take to the doctor who wrote the prescription or to a brick-and-mortar optical shop, both for verifying that the prescription is correct and for adjusting the frame so that it fits properly, says Dr. Karl Citek, O.D., Ph.D, a professor at Pacific University College of Optometry in Forest Grove, Oregon.

Citek is the author of a2011 study that found that more than 44% of lenses purchased online had either an optical or physical problem.

Aside from that, Repka says simply paying attention to how glasses look and feel can go a long way toward making sure they are up to snuff.

If it doesnt feel right, you probably should not wear them, he explains, adding that this applies to any eyewear, not just the inexpensive variety.

And suppose there is an error? Many online eyewear retailers stand behind their products.

The majority of reputable online eyewear providers are lowering the barrier of risk by free returns or 100% satisfaction guarantee, he explains.

Ask Your Eye Care Professional For Advice

Virginia Round

If you do have issues with glasses you bought online, eye care professionals often will check the lenses to make sure the prescription was filled accurately.

“Many eyewear providers are now understanding that the consumer is purchasing eyewear online, and they are allowing their patients to utilize their in-house optician to validate the prescription, make sure the glasses fit correctly and adjust the glasses, Bazan says. His clinic, for example, charges a $50 fee for this service.

Repka says that overall, he doesnt have any reservations about recommending online glasses to patients, as long as they understand that they might not be getting state-of-art optical design or top-quality materials with their purchase.

It is also important to acknowledge that while a frame itself might be cheap, lenses and the associated special features are not always a bargain. A $6 frame, for example, can quickly become a $300+ pair of glasses once you add things like transition lenses, UV protection and blue light blocking.

In other words, youll need to do the math to determine whether the glasses you want are actually a good deal.

Veterans & Vision: What Are The Benefits

Since 1944, veterans have received vision benefits from the federal government. This was the year when President Franklin Roosevelt signed an executive order providing services and training to blinded service members to help them deal with the challenges they faced.

Today, that support is available to blind and low-vision veterans who need assistance with day-to-day functioning. The Veterans Associations Office of Blind Rehabilitation Services works with more than a million blind and low-vision vets.

Additionally, all veterans receiving VA health care benefits receive coverage for routine eye exams and preventive vision testing, including glaucoma testing. Coverage might also cover the cost or partial cost of corrective eyewear.

Vision services offered by the VA include everything from primary eye care services to intermediate and advanced clinical vision care.

Choosing The Right Glasses

Choosing new eyeglasses can be fun as well as daunting. With so many styles and designs to choose from, it’s easy to become overwhelmed. At Atlantic Eyecare in Virginia Beach, VA, our skilled opticians can help simplify this task by providing valuable input on frames and lenses and answering questions you may have about finding the perfect prescription eyewear for your daily needs.

Shulkin Works Around Congress

The insider indicated Shulkin is forcing directors to play a game of hide the pea while failing to seek approval from Congress for the proposal and not giving directors enough funds to adequately repair older facilities.

In a given year, some facilities may get $30 million for their operating budget when they really need $200 million to operate and repair dangerous environmental or operations hazards.

This forces directors like our insider to choose between fixing boilers used to sterilize surgical equipment or making repairs to prevent Legionella.

The longer I cover VA scandals, the more apparent the issue is becoming concerning veteran safety. Directors are forced to choose between the lesser of two evils all the time when it comes to safety.

And, whenever we hear a scandal, that is a case when the director guessed wrong.

Basically, the inside baseball looks more like VA Central Office calling the shots without really being taken to task. Those calls by VACO are then passed through the VISN, these are the networks responsible for many hospitals and community-based clinics.

According to the insider, the Washington DC VA Hospital that recently made headlines for horrible processing of supplies needed to provide care for veterans was a victim of VACO incompetence. Someone in VACO picked a bad vendor, and the local hospital director was caught trying to make up the difference.

Prescription Glasses Lens Guide: Lens Types and Materials

Our turnaround time, from when Superior receives the purchase order from the VA to when the eyeglasses are delivered to the veteran, is typically between 7 to 10 days. Please note that because the time that it takes for Superior to receive the PO from the VA can vary significantly it may sometimes take up to 4 weeks to receive your glasses although in most cases it is typically less. .

Va Disability Benefits For Vision Conditions

Over 250,000 veterans are currently receiving VA disability benefits for eye conditions stemming from their time in service as well. Eye conditions can include loss of vision, loss of light perception, conjunctivitis-related conditions, cataracts, and more. Importantly, eye conditions are eligible for VA disability compensation provided they cause permanent or chronic damage. Acute injuries to the eyes that are treated and resolved are typically not compensable. In May 2018, VA changed the rating schedule for eye conditions, adding three new diagnostic codes: diabetic retinopathy, retinal dystrophy, and post-chiasmal disorders. VA rates eye conditions under 38 CFR § 4.79, diagnostic codes 6000 to 6091.

How Va Measureseye Diseases And Decides On Ratings

Diseases of the eye are rated by the VA based on three main measurements central visual acuity, visual field, and muscle function.

  • Central Visual Acuity: this is how focused or blurry images are at specific distances. This is often tested with the eye chart we are all so familiar with to detect decreased visual acuity. The central visual acuity measurements go from 20/20 to 5/200 and the VA rates the veteran for VA disability benefits based on corrected vision, if it can be corrected. Anything worse than 5/200 is considered legally blind. The VA rates both eyes together, so if a veteran is blind in one eye and has 20/20 in the other, they would likely receive a 40% rating.
  • Visual Field: This is a measurement of the area that the eye sees. Often eye exams have a chart included with 16 meridians for each eye moving outward from the center. This measures the field of vision and, while complicated to measure, it can be compensable. This will show if there is peripheral vision loss, upper vision or lower vision loss, central vision loss, etc.
  • Muscle Dysfunction: This measures how well the muscles of the eye move and is measured on the same type of chart as the visual field. The example to the right shows the measurement field of an eye whose muscle function limits upward and downward vision but is able to move side to side.

What Eye Conditions Commonly Affect Veterans

The eye health issues that most frequently affect veterans include:

    • Loss of one or both eyes, eyelids, eyelashes, and brows
    • Diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and cataracts
    • Sarcoidosis causes uveitis and optic neuropathy
    • Lyme disease causes retinal vasculitis and optic disc edema
    • Cerebrovascular events causes blind spots
    • Thyroid problems cause double or blurred vision, protruding eyes
    • Multiple sclerosis causes changes in vision, optic neuritis, and gradual loss of vision
    • Rheumatoid arthritis causes thinning of the cornea
    • Blast-related/Traumatic brain injury that cause vision problems

Additionally, there are medications given to vets that tend to increase the risk of eye health problems. These include:

    • Hydroxychloroquine
    • Antidepressants
    • Medications for seizures, ulcers, Parkinsons disease, asthma, hemorrhoids, high blood pressure, organ and bone transplants, and arrhythmia
    • Bisphosphonates

    Bifocal And Multifocal Eyeglass Lenses

    Virginia Round

Presbyopia, which is the visual inability of the lens of the eye to focus on objects that are close, may take years to develop. Patients usually begin to show symptoms of presbyopia in their early- to mid-40s. Bifocal or multifocal eyeglasses will provide patients with presbyopia the ability to see clearly at all distances.

Bifocal and multifocal lenses allow patients to focus on both nearby and distant objects without the need to switch glasses or contact lenses. More than one prescription is combined into a single lens of the eyeglass.
