How Long Does It Take To Get Glasses From Costco
If you order glasses for in-person pickup, Costco states they will take about 7 days to process. If you order glasses delivered to your home, itll also take 7 days to process plus an additional 7 to 14 days to ship.
When checking review websites, I found mixed reactions to the shipping time. Many of the negative reviews mention that the glasses took longer than stated to arrive.
My Costco Optical Review
The Costco Vision Center and glasses review below was completed by Vicki, cofounder of Women Who Money. She used a Costco Eye Center for an eye exam and four new pairs of glasses.
After tiring of squinting , I knew it was time to get an eye exam. I typically use local vision centers but remembered they were available at Costco also.
This was the first time I used the Costco Vision Center, and I wanted to share my initial experience in 2019 and my update two years later .
Insomnia And Interrupted Sleep
Of all the problems that can be caused by overexposure to blue light interrupted sleep is the most dangerous one. Blue light can wake you up because your body associates blue light with daylight. So when youre being exposed to blue light in daylight and on your computer screen for many hours a day and then spending another four to five hours a day on your phone or tablet, you are steeping your body in light that is going to keep it awake. When you do go to bed you may not be able to sleep because the blue light has messed up your circadian rhythm.
When your circadian rhythm is out of whack and youre not sleeping enough your body will stop making the hormone melatonin, which is what tells your body when its time to sleep and when its time to get up. Not having enough melatonin will lead to even poorer sleep and can influence the development of serious diseases like obesity and heart disease.
Harvard researchers conducted an experiment to see if blue light exposure had a link to lower levels of serotonin. In their study, they exposed people to both blue light and green light for the same amount of time. Their study found that people exposed to the blue light has about half of the serotonin as the people who were exposed to the green light.² More research is being done but its clear that blue light plays a role in some of the significant health problems that people who are on their devices constantly are developing.

What Is Blue Light And Do You Need To Block It
Imagine light passing through a prism, which fans it out into the colors of the rainbow. Each color you see is part of the visible light spectrum, which is defined by wavelengths. Shorter wavelengths generally become more harmful as they decrease, which is why many people want to block too much blue and violet light from reaching their eyes. However, its not a good idea to banish blue light completely. Its found in every light source, including sunlight, and is known to boost your attention and mood. Long-term effects on eye health are unclear, but some studies have shown that rat retina cells die when exposed to extreme levels of blue light.
Blue light plays a major part in controlling your sleep cycle. Too much of iteven everyday levels, if you spend a lot of time in front of a screenhas proven problematic. Daylight, which contains blue light, helps tell your internal clock when its time to start the day or hit the hay. Stare at a blue-light-emitting device for too long at night, and your body might think its still daytime. Blue light, especially, has been found to suppress melatonin for about twice as long as green light. That could mean the difference between falling asleep in 30 minutes and one hour. During the day, such exposure to blue light can help keep you alert, but in the evening hours it can be potentially problematic .

Most Kids Shouldnt Wear Blue
Parents with children in remote programs may be tempted to buy a pair of blue-light-blocking glasses for their kids, but most children shouldnt be wearing them all day. In fact, their eyes actually need that wavelength from sunlighta deficiency of natural blue light in maturing eyes can lead to myopia . Its really a tough time for parents, and theyre looking to do right by their kids, said Garg. But were not seeing it being a clinical concern. Weve naturally evolved to take in as much as we need. To help protect a childs eyesight and ensure theyre receiving the developmental benefits of natural blue light, make sure theyre getting one to three hours of outdoor playtime a day, said the AOAs Reynolds, and try to limit their screen time and exposure to bright lights before bed . Heres some age-based screen-time guidance from the World Health Organization.

What Are Blue Light Glasses
Blue light glasses have lenses that have a special coating to minimize the impact of blue light on your eyes. If you wear prescription glasses, you can get prescription lenses that have a blue light blocking coating on them when you have your lenses made. Wearing blue light glasses is often recommended for anyone that spends a lot of time working on computers but they can also be useful for people who spend most of their day outside working as well. Sunlight gives off blue light in higher amounts than any electronic device, so jobs that require someone to be outdoors most of the time will expose people to a lot of blue light.

Exploring Blue Light Filtering
With COVID-19 in full swing, many people have turned their heads to screens even more-so than before. Commutes, walks, exercise, and social interaction have also been largely replaced by screens, screens, screens and more screens. Throw in a job that requires full work day screen usage into the mix and ones life easily becomes:
So where does this leave us? Many folks, including myself, turn to blue light filtering lenses to reduce the adverse effects such as eye strain, dryness, and difficulty falling asleep. Does blue light filtering really help though? Ophthalmologists actually disagree that blue light filtering helps with eye strain and other eye-specific problems and that other forms of care should be taken. More sources tend to agree that blue light filtering at the minimum helps keep our circadian rhythm in-tact, promoting sleep wellness. I began using blue light filtering lenses in 2019 and have not had trouble falling asleep due to screen usage. I was able to more accurately attribute my own sleep difficulties to a lack of wind down routine, which experts also highly recommend.
My current pair of glasses causes me this frustration to a large degree. The lenses are combination of blue light filter and sunlight transition that I picked up from Costco Optical. They are very noticeably yellow tinted when wearing them and it is extremely obvious that they filter blue light, maybe amplified by the sunlight transitions response too.

Costco Optical Eye Exams
Costco Optical states that its staff are licensed opticians and high standard optometrists. Most of these optometrists are independent doctors of optometry.
If a person would like to schedule an eye exam, they need to call their local Costco warehouse. When prompted, they should select the optical department. Alternatively, if a person knows their independent doctor of optometrys name, they can contact them directly.
Most major insurance plans cover the cost of a Costco Optical eye exam.
Costcos Policy On Frames And Lenses
Unfortunately, the answer to that question is tricky. Its entirely dependent on the Costco location and what their optical team decides. One thing that is consistent at all Costco’s is that they are not happy about replacing lenses in your own frame. Especially if you didn’t buy them there.
Furthermore, they will charge you an additional $25 per pair for the inconvenience.
This applies even more to eyeglass lens replacement. Costco might do an in-store repair like replacing screws, nose pads, or adjusting the arms. However, it doesnt appear that any Costco location ships out glasses for repair or eyeglass lens replacement.
Costco doesnt even have a warranty for the frames they sell regarding scratches, breaks, or repairs.
Not to worry, though. Getting eyeglass lens replacements for the frames you know, and love is incredibly simple with services like rx-able.com.
How Rx-able.com Compares to Costco for Eyeglass Lens Replacement
Costco is incredibly picky when it comes to eyeglass lens replacement. They can deny your repair or replacement based on size, shape, lens type, prescription, and brand.
They can even cause you trouble asking for adjustments to frames you purchased from their optical center only two years prior. Thats not a very long time for a business to offer updates to their merchandise.

Final Thoughts On My Initial Costco Eye Care Experience
Regular eye exams are necessary to maintain healthy vision. Yet, vision care can be expensive, even when you have major insurance.
That’s why most people try to do what they can to save money on glasses, contacts, and eye care.
Luckily, I was able to wear my previous eyeglasses for just over two years before I needed new ones.
In terms of using Costco, I definitely saved money over the last two vision centers I used. So far, the quality of my glasses seems good.
The doctor and staff of the vision center were a pleasure to work with.
Im happy to report, after spending close to $700, I’m satisfied with my decision to use Costco Optical for eye care.
Since I know issues may arise with my lenses and glasses over time, Ill update this Costco Optical Center review in a few months.
How Do Prices Compare
I bought three pairs of glasses at a local vision center two years ago, for $697.86, an average cost of just over $232/pair.
I saved an average of $75/pair of glasses at Costco Vision.
According to OpticianWorks, consumers can expect to pay between $200 and $600 for a complete pair of glasses with progressive lenses and frames and an additional $75 to $150 for non-glare coatings.
Premium lenses like Varilux are preferred by many people who wear progressive lenses even though they cost hundreds of dollars more than the lenses Costco sells.
Before making your decision on where to buy glasses, research the type of lens you want, the cost, what your insurance may cover, and reviews for the vision center, retail store, or online seller.
