Is Costco A Medicare Supplier
There is no definitive answer to this question as Costco is not a government-run organization. However, many Medicare recipients have reported successfully using Costco as a supplier for their needs. Some have even found that Costcos prices are lower than those of their regular Medicare suppliers.
According to USC researchers, Costco members pay significantly less per prescription for Medicare Part D drugs. In 2018, the federal government paid approximately half of the most common generic prescription drugs according to a study. Policymakers should consider the practices of intermediaries who negotiate drug prices for Medicare, according to the findings of the research. Beneficiaries and taxpayers are not provided with savings generated by intermediaries, according to the authors. Costco is the worlds fifth largest retailer, with over 500 locations in the United States. Generic drugs account for 22% of Part D spending, which allows for the coverage of outpatient prescriptions. Researchers working on a drug pricing reform project recommend that policymakers concentrate on the full distribution system, which includes intermediaries.

The Time Spent At A Costco Eye Exam
On average, it takes about 30-minutes to one hour to complete an eye exam at Costco. As you can imagine, numerous factors impact the amount of time a patient spends in the office for their vision tests.
To add to the convenience, you can purchase lenses, frames, and contact lenses in-store after your eye exam. However, the option to buy online is also available.
If you plan to purchase your corrective products in-store, the length of the appointment can take considerably longer. Plan to spend an hour or two in the Vision Center for the entire process if you are buying prescription glasses or contact lenses.
Cost Of Frames & Lenses: $95
LAs Warby Parker store is inside the Standard Hotel. I parked in the neighborhood and walked into the small storefront. It wasnt too crowded, and the staff was helpful and friendly enough. They left me alone, and I was free to roam their selection on my own. I found those perfect glasses Id seen online. But upon trying them on, they were a little larger than I expected. Which was surprising, because I have a pretty big head.
Actually, they looked pretty different than they did when I used the virtual try-on tool. But those virtual try-on tools are never perfect. And, anyway, I ended up trying on a different pair of glasses that I loved, priced at $95. I gave the employee my prescription, they emailed me my receipt, and I was in and out of the store in 15 minutes.
My grand total for new glasses: $145. If you already have a prescription, youll likely only spend $95. This is a lot less than Ive paid in the past, but its also a lot more than glasses Ive paid using discount sites like Goggles4U.
I have to say, thoughI really, really love these glasses. Theyre quality frames, and Ill probably have them for years.
If youre looking for a regular pair of cheap glasses and youre not partial to any particular style, Id recommend going the budget route. But Warby Parker seems to be a great balance of style, quality and price.
Plus, your purchase goes to a good cause, and thats always a good thing.

While Costco has an optometrist on-site, they do NOT work for Costco.
They are considered an Independent Doctor of Optometry.
This means the doctor has completed optometry school and is licensed to perform eye exams.
They basically rent the space from Costco and set up their optometry practice.
The name of the doctor is ALWAYS posted in front of the optometry department at Costco.
So the next time youre shopping, take note of the their name and do a quick Google search and read any reviews about them, especially on Yelp!.
While the majority of them come highly recommended, its always smart to do some research before trusting them with your eye balls.
What About Costco Customer Service
I initially thought that the customer service at the Costco Optical counter must not be very good since theyre a big warehouse and are selling $1.50 hot dog meals a few yards away.
Here are a few examples of great customer service at Costco.
From RicksterA2: Theyre very open to fixing any issues LensCrafters used to get very annoyed with something like that.
From JJB723: One of the little nose rests broke on one of my pairs of glasses. They replaced both nose rests on the same visit for free.
From Deleted: I scratched my lens and asked if they could fix them, they couldnt but the lady was having a good day and just replaced them for me.

Does Medicare Part A And/or B Cover Vision Care Costs
Again, this gets a little tricky. Generally speaking, Medicare does not cover routine eye exams, eyeglasses or contact lenses. If you have Medicare Part A and/or Part B, you will have to pay 100% out-of-pocket for routine vision care costs.
However, Medicare Part B may help cover costs if you have specific eye health issues.
According to Medicare, if you have cataract surgery where an intraocular lens was implanted, Medicare Part B will help cover the cost of corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses post-surgery. There are some criteria that must be met for Medicare Part B to cover eyeglasses:
- The supplier must be enrolled in Medicare.
- You must have met your Medicare Part B deductible.
- Medicare will cover one pair of eyeglasses OR one set of contact lenses per cataract surgery.
- Any added costs, such as upgraded frames, must be paid for out of pocket.
- You must pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for corrective lenses after each cataract surgery.

Costco members receive a myriad of discounts and deals each year with their membership. Unfortunately, free eye exams are not one of them. I called my local Costco while writing this post, and they told me it was $65 for an eye exam without insurance.
You can schedule eye exam appointments online or over the phone. Your eye health is worth a couple of hours of your day, especially considering it is relatively inexpensive. The eye exam may reveal your eyes are perfectly healthy, or you may learn about problems that need treatment.

My Costco Optical Review
The Costco Vision Center and glasses review below was completed by Vicki, cofounder of Women Who Money. She used a Costco Eye Center for an eye exam and four new pairs of glasses.
After tiring of squinting , I knew it was time to get an eye exam. I typically use local vision centers but remembered they were available at Costco also.
This was the first time I used the Costco Vision Center, and I wanted to share my initial experience in 2019 and my update two years later .
