A landmark review of published research released in 2017 found insufficient evidence to suggest that blue light glasses could improve eye fatigue in any sense, boost overall eye health at all, nor could it work to improve disruptions to sleep patterns. More recently, a 2021 double-blind randomized study published in the American Journal of Ophthalmology took aim at eye strain specifically by organizing 120 symptomatic computer users into two groups one wearing marketed blue-light blocking spectacles, and others just regular clear lenses.

“They basically looked at two hours’ worth of computer tasks and then looked to see if it made any difference and researchers found that these lenses made no difference at all, in regards to eye strain specifically, by two different methods,” Dr. Khurana tells Good Housekeeping.

Can You Test For Blue

Many online resources that suggest you can test blue-light-blocking glasses at home with DIY tricks, such as looking at some overlapping blue circles on your screen or shining a light through the lenses onto photosensitive paper. We tried these methods, but we couldnt find any difference between the pairs we tested and, short of a $5,000 spectrometer, theres no way to know for sure how any particular pair will perform. The best way to determine whether a pair of glasses will work for your eyes is to try them .

Different types of blue blocking glasses exist for different reasons. An important consideration for you is why do you wear blue blocking glasses?

Blue Lights Effect On Melatonin In Healthy Adults

Tips For Dealing With Digital Eye Strain

While blue light glasses may not help, here are a few things you can do to provide relief to your eyes.

Wear light sensitivity glasses

If someone has light sensitivity due to migraines or other light-sensitive conditions, they can get an FL-41 tint, which is a better option than blue light glasses, says Dr. Bajic.

The FL-41 tint, which ranges from a pinkish color to an amber-like color, filters out wavelengths of blue and green. Those colors are bothersome to patients with light sensitivity. A study cited photophobia, the medical term for light sensitivity, as the most bothersome symptom for those with migraines.

You can find options for light sensitivity glass online and at most optometrists. While FL-41 tint might not be covered by most insurances, check with your provider.

Practice the 20-20-20 rule

By looking a further distance away, it forces the eyes to relax by breaking accommodation, says Dr. Bajic. It also helps you to blink again at your bodys normal rate.

Use artificial tears

Using eye drops throughout the day can help keep your eyes lubricated while you work at a computer.

Regular artificial tears should be used no more than four times a day, as the eyes can be sensitive to the preservatives in them. If someone needs to use them more often, they should switch to preservative-free artificial tears.

How Do Blue Light Glasses Work

Different types of blue light glasses operate slightly differently, but the core principle is the same across the board. The glasses work by filtering out specific wavelengths of light in hopes of making it easier on your eyes to look at a screen.

The lenses themselves will often have a yellow-colored tint to them. This is because blue and yellow light are at opposite ends of the wavelength spectrum. The yellow almost works to cancel out some of the blue wavelengths.

In addition, they often have other features to help with your overall eye health, including anti-glare coatings, a prescription, and other measures. Each of these serves its own unique purpose in helping to prevent eye strain and CVS.

Reduce Eye Strain And Headaches

The data on alleviating digital eye strain is pretty controversial. There are many studies showing that blue blockers or blue-blocking lenses for that matter have no profound effect on reducing eye strain, as the main problem doesnt lie in blue light.

  • Wear glasses when using a screen, if an optometrist or opthalmologist has prescribed them.

Do Blue Light Glasses Help Headaches

Eye experts say the low levels of blue light from your computer screen probably arent the thing giving you a headache, so blocking them wont help by much. Instead, the root cause is more likely that while intensely focusing on your screen, you blink less. This can lead to digital eyestrain, and potentially blurry vision, dry eyes, and headaches. Its similar to how you might feel after periods of intense focus, such as reading a book.

In our testing, our reviewer who suffers from tension headaches and migraines said the blue-light-blocking glasses actually caused more migraines than they prevented, and it had nothing to do with the lenses. Bad glasses with tight frames, pinching nose pads, or acute light reflections may worsen your headache symptoms, rather than relieve them.

Do Blue Light Glasses Block All Blue Light

What you need to know before buying blue-light glasses

They can, but they usually dont and for good reason.

Lenses that block 100% of blue light have a deep orange or amber tint, greatly changing the way everything looks around us.

However, lenses with 10% or 20% protection can appear almost clear. These usually make more sense for all-day wear. Many computer- or gaming-specific glasses have visibly yellow lenses, since they tend to block around 50% or 60% of blue light.

Can You Wear Blue Light Glasses All Day

Yes, blocking blue light all day will not hurt your vision.

But be aware that blocking too much blue light may have the reverse effect on your alertness, making you feel groggy earlier in the day. This is especially true for high-percentage lenses, but these are often taken on and off during long screen sessions.

If you feel more tired wearing high-percentage blue blocking glasses, consider stepping down to a lower percentage.
