Do Blue Light Glasses Really Work

Blue Light Blocking Glasses Test Comparison Review

While their popularity has certainly skyrocketed as more people transition into a permanent work-from-home schedule, blue light glasses are controversial among healthcare providers, as there is not enough substantial research data to support their use to reduce eye strain or to help improve sleep. “There is little to no evidence supporting the use of blue-light blocking glasses lenses in promoting eye health,” summarizes Rahul Khurana, M.D., a clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology . This position is also supported by other leading healthcare organizations like the American Macular Degeneration Foundation.

A landmark review of published research released in 2017 found insufficient evidence to suggest that blue light glasses could improve eye fatigue in any sense, boost overall eye health at all, nor could it work to improve disruptions to sleep patterns. More recently, a 2021 double-blind randomized study published in the American Journal of Ophthalmology took aim at eye strain specifically by organizing 120 symptomatic computer users into two groups one wearing marketed blue-light blocking spectacles, and others just regular clear lenses.

“They basically looked at two hours’ worth of computer tasks and then looked to see if it made any difference and researchers found that these lenses made no difference at all, in regards to eye strain specifically, by two different methods,” Dr. Khurana tells Good Housekeeping.

Can You Test For Blue

Many online resources that suggest you can test blue-light-blocking glasses at home with DIY tricks, such as looking at some overlapping blue circles on your screen or shining a light through the lenses onto photosensitive paper. We tried these methods, but we couldnt find any difference between the pairs we tested and, short of a $5,000 spectrometer, theres no way to know for sure how any particular pair will perform. The best way to determine whether a pair of glasses will work for your eyes is to try them .

When youre ready for an upgrade, The Vision Council, which represents optical manufacturers like EyeBuyDirect and Zenni, said buying prescription glasses from a professional with medical-grade blue-light-blocking lenses is the safest bet. And if you want to confirm the results for yourself, you can ask them for a spectral report, which details how much light and at which wavelengths their lenses actually block.

Electromagnetic Field Pulsation And Light

Energy moves, energy flows. Light is just one form of energy that we can visually see. Energy is transmitted, released, and showcased through pulsation. If youve ever heard of electromagnetic radiation , it consists of electromagnetic field waves which propagate through space.

The shorter the wavelength of the light, the higher the effect on our system. Very short wavelengths like UV or ultraviolet and X-rays are known to be detrimental and dangerous for humans. On the other hand, the longer the wavelength, the less of an effect it has.

Blue light, as well as other shorter wavelengths, are energy-stimulating, while lights with longer wavelengths like infrared or red wont make us alert, but they signify nighttime and can help us relax.

Why Are There Different Types Of Blue Blocking Glasses

Posted by Blue Block Glasses Team on August 27, 2018 .

We often receive emails that read something like this

I bought blue blocker glasses on Amazon or My optician put on a coating to remove blue light. Yet when I do your blue blocking filter test, both images dont appear the same. Did I get scammed? Do my glasses actually filter blue light

Different types of blue blocking glasses exist for different reasons. An important consideration for you is why do you wear blue blocking glasses?

  • I wear blue blocking glasses to protect my eyes and prevent eyestrain from looking at the computer all day. Ive heard that looking at screens is destroying my eyes.
  • I wear blue blocking glasses to improve my sleep.

*Note there are other uses, such as for migraines, driving or clarity, but we will focus on these above 2 cases in the article*

You need different types of glasses depending on your answer to this question. So think hard do some research and continue reading. Lets start by asking a basic question?

Blue Lights Effect On Melatonin In Healthy Adults

In 2011, a small study of a handful of healthy adults measured nighttime melatonin levels under varying conditions. The conditions included 2 hours of being blindfolded, then 90 minutes of exposure to various irradiance blue LED lamps, white fluorescent lamps, and followed by 90 minutes of additional blindfold time. In this study, melatonin concentration was found to be suppressed significantly with some blue light irradiances. However, actual sleep quality was not assessed.

The evidence that blue light significantly suppresses melatonin levels could mean that in theory, wearing blue blockers may help you sleep better at night. However, that doesnt mean you should rely on them to prevent eye strain, especially when there are other reliable ways to do this.

In 2019, another study of blue light filtering glasses provided subjectively better sleep when worn in the evening, but researchers couldnt verify this with objective measurements of sleep parameters.

Tips For Dealing With Digital Eye Strain

While blue light glasses may not help, here are a few things you can do to provide relief to your eyes.

Wear light sensitivity glasses

If someone has light sensitivity due to migraines or other light-sensitive conditions, they can get an FL-41 tint, which is a better option than blue light glasses, says Dr. Bajic.

The FL-41 tint, which ranges from a pinkish color to an amber-like color, filters out wavelengths of blue and green. Those colors are bothersome to patients with light sensitivity. A study cited photophobia, the medical term for light sensitivity, as the most bothersome symptom for those with migraines.

You can find options for light sensitivity glass online and at most optometrists. While FL-41 tint might not be covered by most insurances, check with your provider.

Practice the 20-20-20 rule

By looking a further distance away, it forces the eyes to relax by breaking accommodation, says Dr. Bajic. It also helps you to blink again at your bodys normal rate.

Use artificial tears

Using eye drops throughout the day can help keep your eyes lubricated while you work at a computer.

Regular artificial tears should be used no more than four times a day, as the eyes can be sensitive to the preservatives in them. If someone needs to use them more often, they should switch to preservative-free artificial tears.

Sit an arms length away from your screen

People should sit a comfortable distance away from screens, says Dr. Bajic.

How Do Blue Light Glasses Work

Different types of blue light glasses operate slightly differently, but the core principle is the same across the board. The glasses work by filtering out specific wavelengths of light in hopes of making it easier on your eyes to look at a screen.

The lenses themselves will often have a yellow-colored tint to them. This is because blue and yellow light are at opposite ends of the wavelength spectrum. The yellow almost works to cancel out some of the blue wavelengths.

In addition, they often have other features to help with your overall eye health, including anti-glare coatings, a prescription, and other measures. Each of these serves its own unique purpose in helping to prevent eye strain and CVS.

Reduce Eye Strain And Headaches

The data on alleviating digital eye strain is pretty controversial. There are many studies showing that blue blockers or blue-blocking lenses for that matter have no profound effect on reducing eye strain, as the main problem doesnt lie in blue light.

Most digital eye strain problems like headaches, dry eyes, eye fatigue, or ocular muscle fatigue come from staring at a screen for a long-duration, not blinking enough, and being too close to your screen. Blue light isnt found to be a strong contributing factor for headaches or digital eye strain, yet.

However, in people with light sensitivity who experience migraines or strong headaches, dimming the screen lights to night mode, or orange shade, and reducing brightness or contrast can significantly help.

This is exactly what some blue blockers can do, reduce the stimulation of photosensitive receptors as less blue light is received, thus resulting in lower stimulation. Plus many glasses have an amber color with a darker tone which reduces the overall light on the eye, which along with high contrast are some of the main reasons people experience headaches.

What Makes Blue Light Blocking Glasses Different

Computer Glasses VS Blue Light Glasses (Which Do You Need?)

The reason there are different types of blue light blocking glasses is that they block different amounts of blue light exposure. The majority of blue light blocking glasses advertised on amazon are simple computer glasses, which you will find is very different from 100% blue light blocking glasses, also known as amber glasses. It is essential to know the difference between the two when using them as 100% blue light blocking glasses specifically help with the production of melatonin to aid you in falling asleep, therefore should only be worn in the hours leading up to sleeping.

Can Blue Light From My Phone Lead To Eye Disease

You may hear some concern in the ophthalmology community regarding blue light because it is the closest to invisible, ultraviolet light on the color spectrum. As you know, without adequate sun protection, UV light rays can burn your skin. UV rays can also burn your eyes, and that is the type of UV light exposure that can potentially lead to eye disease.

However, the small amount of blue light emitted from our devices is different from UV light, and according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, blue light specifically coming from device screens has never been proven to cause any harm to our eyes.

Whats The Difference Between Blue Light Glasses And Computer Glasses

Most computer glasses are also blue light glasses, but not necessarily the other way around.

Computer glasses usually have a higher degree of blue light protection plus slight magnification to further reduce eye fatigue. Computer glasses with magnification act like reading glasses, except they optimize intermediate-distance vision instead of near vision, and they have blue light protection.

If these specialized glasses work for you, the additional comfort can translate into increased work productivity.

Gaming glasses also tend to include slight magnification and mid-range blue light protection.

Clear everyday blue light glasses may be better for general use and minor eye fatigue. These lenses block a low degree of blue light and offer more flexibility in terms of style and facial fit.

If you’re not sure how to find the best computer glasses for your needs, it’s always a good idea to consult with your eye doctor.

Why Does Blue Light Matter

Blue light is a type of visible light on the light spectrum. It has a relatively short wavelength of 415 to 455 nanometers. Because of this, blue light rays contain more energy than many other light types.

Blue light isnt produced by artificial sources only. We see blue light naturally every time we look up at a blue sky.

For thousands of years, humans were exposed to blue light only during the hours that the sun was up. So, our brains are trained to interpret blue light as a cue to be alert, energetic, and keep our bodies ready for action.

Thats why blue light exposure from a device can confuse your body. Your waking and sleeping cycle can be thrown off by high levels of blue light exposure for example, from an artificial source in an otherwise dark environment.

And if youre exposed to too much blue light during the day, your eyes can grow fatigued.

Dry eye is also a side effect of too much blue light exposure. You may be on your devices for more than 10 hours each day, both at home and at work so you might be all too familiar with these symptoms.

Enter blue light glasses. These types of glasses are meant to filter blue light as light waves pass into your eyes. The idea is that this would allow you to use sources of blue light, like smartphones and laptops, with minimal side effects.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology doesnt currently recommend special blue-light-filtering glasses for use when you work with computers.

Blue Light Glasses And Sleep Quality

While The American Academy of Ophthalmology doesnt state that blue light is damaging to the eyes, there are many people who say wearing blue blockers in the evenings helps them sleep better.

Maybe it has to do with circadian rhythm or simply reducing harsh stimuli before heading for bed. Whatever the reason, some data seems to suggest that blue light blocking lenses may have sleep-related benefits in some people. But lets take a closer look at those studies.

What Exactly Is Blue Light

Blue light is a wavelength thats naturally present in light, including light from the sun. Compared to other light types, blue light has a short wavelength. This is important because doctors associate short-wavelength light with greater risk for eye damage.

While many electronics emit blue light, computer screens and televisions typically release more blue light than other electronics. This is because computers and televisions commonly use liquid crystal displays or LCDs. These screens may look super-clear and vibrant, but they also release more blue light than their non-LCD counterparts.

Too much blue light exposure is thought to:

  • affect your circadian rhythm, which can make it harder to go to sleep at night
  • increase eyestrain
  • cause visual fatigue

Blue light isnt all bad, though. Because this wavelength is produced by the sun, it can promote alertness, signaling that its time to get up and start your day.

And a lot of studies on blue light and eye damage have been conducted on animals or in controlled laboratory settings. This makes it hard to know exactly how blue light affects humans in real-life scenarios.

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, blue light from electronic devices wont lead to eye disease. They endorse using other approaches to improve your sleep, such as avoiding screens altogether in the hour or two before going to bed.

Can Blue Light Glasses Be Harmful

There appears to be no evidence that blue light glasses are harmful. However, people who wear them may expect them to work and therefore not take other precautions that could help alleviate symptoms associated with screen time.

Several companies manufacture blue light glasses and lenses. Products include:

  • Hi-Vision BlueControl
  • Gammaray Optix blue light blocking glasses
  • Felix Gray Turing glasses
  • Uvex Skyper blue light blocking glasses
  • Cyxus blue light filtering computer glasses
  • Prospek blue light glasses

The AAO recommends the following tips for avoiding eyestrain:

  • Stay around an arms length, or 25 inches, away from screens.
  • Look slightly downwards at the screen.
  • Use the 20-20-20 rule, which involves looking away from the screen to an object at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes, to give the eyes a break.
  • Use artificial tears to add moisture if the eyes feel dry.
  • Adjust the lighting in a room and the contrast levels of the screen to make it comfortable to look at.
  • Use a matte screen filter if needed.
  • Wear glasses when using a screen, if an optometrist or opthalmologist has prescribed them.

CVS is a collection of eye and vision problems that can occur following prolonged use of digital screens, such as those on a computer, tablet, or smartphone.

Symptoms of CVS include:

Do Blue Light Glasses Help Headaches

Eye experts say the low levels of blue light from your computer screen probably arent the thing giving you a headache, so blocking them wont help by much. Instead, the root cause is more likely that while intensely focusing on your screen, you blink less. This can lead to digital eyestrain, and potentially blurry vision, dry eyes, and headaches. Its similar to how you might feel after periods of intense focus, such as reading a book.

In our testing, our reviewer who suffers from tension headaches and migraines said the blue-light-blocking glasses actually caused more migraines than they prevented, and it had nothing to do with the lenses. Bad glasses with tight frames, pinching nose pads, or acute light reflections may worsen your headache symptoms, rather than relieve them.

Do Blue Light Glasses Block All Blue Light

What you need to know before buying blue-light glasses

They can, but they usually dont and for good reason.

Lenses that block 100% of blue light have a deep orange or amber tint, greatly changing the way everything looks around us.

However, lenses with 10% or 20% protection can appear almost clear. These usually make more sense for all-day wear. Many computer- or gaming-specific glasses have visibly yellow lenses, since they tend to block around 50% or 60% of blue light.

You may want to experiment with different levels of protection to see what works best for you.

Can You Wear Blue Light Glasses All Day

Yes, blocking blue light all day will not hurt your vision.

But be aware that blocking too much blue light may have the reverse effect on your alertness, making you feel groggy earlier in the day. This is especially true for high-percentage lenses, but these are often taken on and off during long screen sessions.

If you feel more tired wearing high-percentage blue blocking glasses, consider stepping down to a lower percentage.
