The Experts Weigh In On Blue Light
While the American Academy of Ophthalmology recognizes digital eye strain, it stops short of asserting that blue light causes eye damage or adversely affects eye health. See the following excerpts from a 2021 article published on the AAO website:
Long hours staring at digital screens leads to decreased blinking. Blinking less sometimes causes a series of temporary eye symptoms known as eye strain. But these effects are caused by how people use their screens, not by anything coming from the screens. The best way to avoid eye strain is to take breaks from the screen frequently.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology does not recommend blue light-blocking glasses because of the lack of scientific evidence that blue light is damaging to the eyes.
In short, there are other factors in play that may be contributing to your eye strain. To put it plainly, your discomfort probably isnt caused by the blue light itself, but by effects like decreased blinking. You should also keep in mind that experiencing eye strain isnt the same thing as having eye disease.
Passing symptoms of eye strain aside, the big unanswered question is this:
Does blue light actually damage your eyes?
No, blue light will not damage your eyes. While its often asserted online and in the media that it does, there is no evidence to support this claim.

Most common screen time-related issues: I’ve suffered from migraines since middle school, so constantly staring at screens means that I can pretty much expect daily headaches.
My experience with the glasses: Since I wear contacts, I was really interested to see 1) if wearing glasses again would be annoying for me and 2) if I’d finally find a cure for my headaches.
The first day wearing the glasses was really a struggle, despite the fact that I felt so cool and trendy in them. I found out very quickly that, yes, wearing glasses is annoying â especially when I already suffer through putting contacts in every morning to avoid just that. I felt dizzy any time I looked up from my laptop or when I got up from my desk, so when I felt a pretty solid headache coming on I decided to take the glasses off. I resolved to be better after that, but every time I’d wear the glasses for more than two or three hours, I’d get a worse headache than usual.
Maybe it’s because I’m constantly on my laptop, checking up on the Bustle app on my phone, then running around the office for one thing or another, but switching between screens seemed to be a huge trigger for me. By the end of the first week I decided not to wear the glasses at all, and I never looked back.
Final verdict: While the glasses were super cute, they just weren’t for me. I would, however, consider putting prescription lenses into a pair because they really do look very cool.

Most common screen time-related issues: I get migraines with aura, and they’re often heavily exacerbated by looking at any sort of screen â laptop or phone. I generally experience around three of these big headaches a month, plus a couple of smaller headaches about two times a week. All of my headaches generally occur toward the evening, after I’ve been staring at my computer screen for a few hours.
My experience with the glasses: I mean, I’ll be honest: When I first heard about these glasses, I almost thought they were too good to be true. How could a pair of glasses solve years of screen-related headache issues? But they were cute, and I figured, hey, the future is now. After all, we have robot vacuum cleaners. Clearly, science has come a long way in recent decades, so why not give these cool glasses a go?
When I asked my doctor, Dr. Sarah L Rahal, MD, an Assistant Professor of Neurology and Pediatrics at Mount Sinai Hospital, if the glasses could help with my migraines, she was unconvinced: “Unfortunately, there have been no clinical trials or data in the migraine population regarding glasses like this, so any proposed benefit is unfounded as of yet.” She did point out a similar product, though, called TheraSpecs, “which makes lenses targeted for migraineurs with photophobia, based on similar principals, and they have a clear clinical trial showing efficacy.” Maybe there was some hope for me, after all!

Is Blue Light Really Bad For You

It can also affect your sleep by disrupting your circadian rhythm. And while were all exposed to the blue light that comes from the sun , which actually boosts attention and mood during the day, its our exposure to blue light outside of daylight hours that can affect us in less desirable ways.

Athletes Blue Light And Falling Asleep
In a 2019 study, 15 healthy athletes were instructed to wear either blue blocking or transparent glasses for 3 hours before going to bed. Their sleep was monitored for 9 nights in a row, and they were given a set of guidelines to follow for their nighttime routine. While blocking the short-wavelength blue light was mainly effective in shortening the time it took them to get to sleep, there was no impact on total sleep time or wakefulness after they got to sleep.
What The Science Says About Blue Light Glasses
Research released in February of 2021 indicates that blue light lenses may have no effect at relieving digital eye strain symptoms. 120 eye-strain-symptomatic computer users were asked to complete a 2-hour computer task. Each person was randomly given either clear glasses or blue blockers, but each was led to believe they were wearing blue blockers.
After 2 hours, there was no significant difference in the feedback given from each group. Even more telling is that there was no difference in the eye strain symptom score between the two groups. In short, the blue light glasses had no effect.
Add this study to the fact that blue light may not even be the real culprit for your digital eye strain, and there are serious doubts about the effectiveness of blue light blocking glasses.

Things To Consider Before Buying Gaming Glasses
Trying to find the right frames can feel overwhelming. Heres what you should keep in mind when shopping for the best gaming glasses to suit your needs.
How Youll Wear Them: Do you plan on wearing your gaming glasses under a headset or headphones? On average, how long will you be wearing them? Do you want a pair that will double as sunglasses for outdoor use? Questions like these will help you narrow down your options to those with features that youll use the most.
Other Glasses You Wear: If you wear glasses on a day-to-day basis, youll want to look out for gaming glasses that come with magnification built into the lenses. Filtering out blue light can only help your eyes so much if youre straining to see the screen in the first place. In addition, many manufacturers also offer versions of their products with prescription-strength lenses for a higher cost.
Style: Just like with regular glasses, gaming glasses come in an extensive range of shapes, sizes, and designs, from chunky hipster frames to sleek, futuristic-looking styles. Some manufacturers, like Gunnar and Horus X, let you try on their products virtually on their websites. When deciding on the right pair, take into consideration what kind of glasses suit your face shape and personal style. If you already have a pair of glasses or sunglasses that you really like, try to find gaming glasses with a similar design.
How To Know If You Need Blue
Anyone who spends a significant amount of time looking at screens could benefit from giving blue light glasses a trythough people who suffer from extreme eye strain should consult their doctor to explore more personalized treatment methods. If you struggle to fall asleep or are prone to looking at devices right before bed, blue light glasses might be a great investment for you. However, it’s worth noting that those who work on graphics during the day may want to skip blue light classes, as they can distort the colors on your screen.

How Do Computers Affect Your Eyes
How do computers affect your eyes? For one, when you are working on the computer your eyes areconstantly refocusing. To read, your eyes are moving back and forth. Also, a lot of people must lookdown at paperwork then back up at the computer. This is a major workout for your eye muscles. Screensalso add contrast and glare which can be even harsher on your eyes than just a regular piece of paperwith print. Dry eye is another big issue with computer use. When we stare at the screen, we dont blinkas much, and our eyes dry out. This can cause vision to be blurry off and on throughout the day. If youarent wearing the proper glasses prescription, this can put additional strain onto your alreadyoverloaded eyes. There is no proof yet on whether computers cause long-term damage to the eye, butthe short-term discomfort is enough to cause issues at work.
