Try A Scratch Filler Kit

POLISH big scratches out of your glasses

There are a variety of scratch filler kits that you can buy to repair scratches on everything from tabletops to car windshields. Most kits include a glass polishing compound and the cloths and tools youll need to do the job.

Just make sure you follow the instructions carefully. If not done correctly, you can do more harm than good.

Apply A Baby Wash Or A Mild Shampoo

A baby wash or baby shampoo is a non abrasive solution to remove scratches from lenses, without removing the protective anti reflective or anti fog surface.

Pour warm water into a small bowl and add a few drops of the mild shampoo or baby wash. Dip a microfiber cloth into the soapy solution and carefully rub the scratches with it.

Rinse your glasses to see if there are no more scratch marks. If there are, you can repeat the process a few more times.

Rinse Your Lenses Off

  • Use water and dish soap to remove any excess solution thats still on your lenses. Turn on your kitchen sink and make sure the water is room temperature. Squeeze a small drop of dish soap onto your lenses, then place them under the running water. Rinse them until youve removed any residue or soap suds.XResearch source

    Toothpaste And A Soft Cloth

A small amount of whitening toothpaste, which is slightly more abrasive than regular toothpaste, to a soft, clean cloth. Buff the scratched glass in small circular motions. The grit in the toothpaste is enough to remove small scratches from tempered glass.

After rubbing for a few minutes, rinse the glass with water to reveal what youve accomplished. If the scratch remains but seems to be getting better, repeat the process up to two more times. Move on to the next step if the scratch is still there after three attempts to remove it with toothpaste.

How to Remove Scratches From Glass [An Easy and Quick Guide]

Search online, and youll find plenty of tutorials instructing you to use toothpaste, baking soda, or even sandpaper to polish the surface of your lenses until any scratches are gone.

The method is simple: Just apply the abrasive substance or cleaner to your lenses using a cotton ball or lint-free cloth and rub until the toothpaste or baking soda is absorbed. Repeat until you can no longer see the scratches.

But note the word abrasive. As promising as these tutorials might be, using an abrasive product to fix scratched lenses could make the problem worse.

While buffing away enough of the lens surface to remove visible scratches, youll also may have removed any anti-reflective or mirrored coating on the lens.

Do-it-yourself methods of fixing scratched sunglass lenses also can reduce how well they protect your eyes from the suns damaging rays or shield your eyes from glare. The visual quality of your lenses could be damaged, too, making it even harder to see through your sunglasses than before you fixed them.

    Wear Your Glasses More

A simple solution is to keep your glasses on your face. If you do want to remove them, wear a strap around the stems. You can therefore have the glasses hanging down from your neck, reducing the likelihood that a sharp object will scratch it.

If youre new to glasses, this can be particularly difficult. It is, however, important to get into the habit early so you develop a habit of keeping them on as much as possible.

Can I Get My Lenses Repaired At An Opticians

How to Remove Scratches From Plastic Lens Glasses

If you notice a scratch on your lenses, or any damage to your glasses or sunglasses, your optician can advise you on the best solution for you. In store, we can use a specialist lens cleaning spray to identify whether theyre scratched, or whether something may have got stuck onto the lens surface.

Unfortunately, its not possible to repair a scratch on your lens as it will have caused permanent damage to the lens surface or treatment. If a scratch is found, your optician can order a new pair of lenses to fit your frames. This is done at your request, but wed always recommend replacing your lenses if the scratch is within your line of vision.

When you get new glasses or prescription sunglasses, your optician will remind you of everything you need to know about taking care of your lenses and how to keep them clean and scratch-free in the future. Theyll also make small adjustments to the fit of your frames to make sure they fit comfortably and securely, so they wont fall off or get damaged.

    What Not To Do

Youll often see a recommendation to spread toothpaste over your lenses and gently rub it in to remove scratches. While this can work, its important to keep in mind that you have to use non-gel, non-abrasive, non-whitening toothpaste or you risk making the damage worse. We suggest steering clear of toothpaste altogether, as our method is just as effective and not nearly as risky.

Another common way is to use glass etching solutions to get rid of damaged coating from lenses. Technically, this will work, but youre taking a risk here, too. If the solution sits on your actual lenses for too long, it can really do a number on them. If you opt for this method, just be aware that you could end up doing far worse damage than a minor scratch plus, youll lose the benefit of any protective coating on your lenses.

How To Remove Scratches From Eyeglasses

Its one thing to have to look at scratches on a glass table or a window. But dealing with scratches on your eyeglasses can be downright impossible. If youve ever had to tilt your head or lift your neck in a certain way so that you can avoid the scratches on your lenses, youre not alone.

The toothpaste, baking soda, and metal polish methods listed above can work on eyeglasses as well. But because eyeglass lenses are usually coated, there are some other things you can try as well.

You can rub car wax or Turtle wax in small circles to buff out surface scratches. On plastic or polycarbonate lenses, you can use a glass etching cream to rub out the scratch then rinse with warm water.

A combination of dry mustard and vinegar can also be effective. Make a paste with these two ingredients and rub it into the scratches. Mustard can irritate the eyes, so make sure you rinse it thoroughly when youre done!

You can even use baby oil. Add a small dot of baby oil to the scratch and buff with a clean cloth until the scratch is no longer visible.

Does Using Toothpaste On Scratched Glasses Work

Not really, and rubbing toothpaste on your glasses can make scratches worse.

The thinking behind applying toothpaste to scratched lenses is that the tiny abrasive particles within the paste will wear down the lens coating enough to hide the scratch. Certain toothpastes are more abrasive than others: gel toothpastes and toothpastes with whiteners will be far harsher on your glasses.

If you ask us, the toothpaste method isnt worth the risk.

How to Remove Scratches from Glass

Using a filler like car or furniture wax or silver polish to your glasses to smooth out scratches is potentially less destructive, but the downside is that it tends to be a shorter-term solution that needs to be repeated frequently.

The problem with all the of the above is that there’s always the potential to make things worse instead of better. Founder and creative director of Westward Leaning Robert Denning notes that with mirrored lenses in particular, any attempt to remove scratches can actually worsen the lens.

“The best way to have scratch-free lenses is to protect your glasses when you are not wearing them and avoid getting scratches in the first place,” he said via email.

Ian Foulke, global marketing director of sports and lifestyle sunglasses brand Electric, agrees. “They can’t be repaired or fixed without further distorting the quality of the lens or vision through them,” Foulke claimed via email. “Using an abrasive beach towel or even a woven shirt or dress can degrade lens quality, so be sure to use the microfiber bag or cleaning cloth your sunglasses come with.” Storing your sunnies in a case rather than just throwing them in the bag along with all your other stuff is a good idea, too.

    Buff With A Metal Polish

Metal polishes work wonders on glass. When used the right way, they are an effective way to remove scratches without having to replace or repair the glass.

Make sure the glass is free of all dirt and debris, then apply a small amount of metal polish to a cotton ball. Buff it into the scratch in a circular motion then use a clean, damp cloth to remove the excess when youre done.

Just be careful not to use too much. Too much polish can actually do more damage to the glass.

There are a variety of metal polishes that you can use, such as Brasso Multi-Purpose Metal Polish and Jewelers Rouge. Jewelers Rouge contains cerium oxide, which is often found in glass polishing compounds for windows and mirrors.

This method takes a bit of elbow grease. Youll need to be firm, but dont press too hard or you run the risk of shattering the glass.
