What you need to know before buying blue-light glasses

Beyond blue light glasses, Hartl said she recommends blue light blocking screen covers that you can put on your computer, phones and tablets. Blue light blocking screen covers are a one and done solution, whereas you have to remember to put your blue light glasses on.

Rapoport also suggested using night mode on your tech when the sun goes down, or downloading an app like F.Lux. Both options give your screen a yellow hue, decreasing the intensity of the blue light you see.

Additionally, to help keep your eyes moist throughout the day, Rapoport recommended keeping preservative-free eye lubricating drops next to your computer and using them throughout the day. She said keeping a humidifier by your workstation or a desktop humidifier on your desk can help, too, and to follow the 20-20-20 rule: looking 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes.

What Is Blue Light And Where Does It Come From

Common sources of blue light include the sun, fluorescent lighting, LED lighting, and digital devices like computers and smartphones. You see, visible light comes in a spectrum of wavelengths. Each wavelength has its own energy level, and blue light actually has the highest energy of any wavelength on the visible spectrum.

Because of that, blue light has the potential to impact your eye health more than other types of visible light. Digital screens of all kinds computers, smartphones, televisions, tablets emit lots of this high-energy blue light.

Can I Use Computer Glasses For Reading

It isnt recommended to use computer glasses, or blue light filtering glasses, for reading anything other than a digital screen, because thats what theyre designed for. Computer glasses help reduce digital eye strain which is a cause of long hours spent in front of screens which emit potentially harmful blue light. While they do have some similar features to reading glasses, its better to opt for readers for things like books and physical materials.

No More Straining & Finally Some Deep Sleep

I have to admit I was skeptical at first with the blue blocker glasses. I need to study at night after my little one goes to sleep and Prior to using My eyes would feel so so strained and when I would finally go to bed, even though I was tired, I felt wide awake. Doing this every night slowly took a toll. When I wore the Nightfall glasses I noticed the difference in the first night! No more eye strain, and I would fall asleep quickly after study! Extremely happy!

Blue Light Glasses Don’t Have To Be Ugly

The company I tried, Felix Gray, is a newer brand. Their glasses filter out the higher end of the blue light spectrum, so the lens don’t look yellow. They also add an anti-glare coating on top to cut down on digital eye strain.

The glasses are also adorably chic, with options to add magnification if you need it. I opted for Nash frames in the “Whiskey Tortoise” pattern with blue light filtering and no magnification. The experiment was on.

What To Look For In Blue

Why you don’t need blue light lenses: Hidden camera investigation (Marketplace)

Shopping for glasses online is tricky because you cant try them on to find a pair thats both comfortable and complements your face shape. Most over-the-counter glasses are sold in only a size or two, while prescription pairs and some higher-end non-prescription sunglasses usually have three numbers etched into the arms, such as 50-16-135. These are millimeter measurements that correspond to the lens width, bridge width, and arm length, respectively. Remove some of the guesswork by using a pair of well-fitting glasses to figure out your size. Either look at the numbers or, if theyre missing, measure the frames yourself. Try to stick to glasses that closely match those measurements, particularly the bridge and the arm.

Then consider the lens color. All of the glasses Wirecutter tested appeared to be colorless at first glance, but when we wore them, we noticed they all have a faint to moderate orange tint. Orange lenses block blue light because they only let through light with similar wavelengths, like orange and red. The stronger the orange tint, the less blue light gets through, decreasing the amount your eyes are absorbing and potentially helping to counteract negative effects.

The Bigger Issue Of Eye Strain

According to data from DataReportal published in March 2022, the average American spends 7 hours and 4 minutes in front of a screen every day.

If youve felt like your eyes were bugging you after hours in front of a computer or other screen, you may have experienced digital eye strain. Digital eye strain is also known as computer vision syndrome, or CVS. estimates that 90% of people who use digital devices experience symptoms of digital eye strain, including:

  • Pain in the shoulders, back, or neck
  • Trouble focusing between near and far
  • Discomfort or strain in the eyes
  • Difficulty keeping eyes open
  • Tearing
  • Itchy eyes

The severity of your symptoms will depend largely on how long youve been using the digital device. Underlying eye conditions will also have an effect, as will other factors such as glare on the screen from overhead lights.

Fortunately, the symptoms of digital eye strain or computer vision syndrome are usually temporary, and will soon subside when you stop using your devices. Sometimes, its possible for symptoms to continue for a while after that.

Additional Ways To Reduce The Effects Of Blue Light

Although there are many benefits to wearing blue light blocking glasses, using the suggestions below alongside the glasses can help maximize benefits.

  • Limit screen time If you take regular breaks from your laptop or TV, this will allow your eyes to rest and limit blue light exposure. You can use the 20/20/20 rule every 20 minutes, focus on an object 20 feet away for a minimum of 20 seconds.
  • Avoid blue light at night Although we should try at limit exposure as much as we can, its particularly important to avoid blue light in the evening as it can disrupt your sleep. As a general guide, its advised to shut down devices at least 3 hours before bed.
  • Use a filter If you do need to use devices in the evening you can switch your phone or laptop to night mode this will lower the amount of blue light it releases and ease eye strain. You can also apply filters to your tablet or smartphone that have a yellow tint, again limiting the amount of blue light they emit.

One of the most effective ways to reduce blue light exposure and improve your sleep is to avoid using electronics before bed. Ideally, you should try to end screen time at least 1 hour before you go to bed, to give your body time to ramp up melatonin production. Instead of scrolling through social media, consider winding down by reading a book or listening to music.

Most importantly, you should wear blue light blocking glasses in the evening hours if you are working on a late-night project on your computer or texting on your phone.

    Switch Up Your Home Lighting

Fluorescent lights and LED bulbs typically emit more blue light than warmer-toned incandescent light bulbs, though plenty of manufacturers are starting to make LED lightbulbs that emulate the color pattern of incandescent lightbulbs. Consider switching to warmer-toned lightbulbs or installing a dimmer to reduce the brightness of your home lighting as you approach bedtime. Benefits Of Blue Light Blocking Glasses

Research on the effects of blue light glasses is limited because this issue is novel. However, studies have shown that eyewear with blue light filters is an effective treatment for LED-induced melatonin suppression.

The main benefit of blue light blocking glasses is improved sleep. Wearing them after 5 or 6 pm can prevent melatonin suppression.

Many eye doctors and patients have reported decreased digital eye strain and an increased ability to focus in people who have high screen times. Though it is unproved, blue blockers may also help prevent against ocular conditions such as macular degeneration, as well as other serious health conditions.

Blue Blockers Bipolar Patients And Sleep Quality

A 2020 study randomized 20 hospitalized bipolar patients in a manic state, with some wearing clear glasses and others wearing blue blocking glasses for 7 days. During that time, their motor activity, sleep, and wakefulness patterns were monitored. After 5 nights, the blue blocker group experienced significantly better sleep efficiency and less wakefulness after getting to sleep.

These findings suggest that blue blocking glasses may help hospitalized manic patients sleep better. However, the sample size of the study was small, and no baseline data was gathered before the study.
