More About Rheos Floating Sunglasses
Rheos Gear was born in 2016. Jake and Becca are a husband and wife team that was living out of their van at the time of the companys inception. The central question that sparked the companys creation came from Becca. One fateful day, she turned to Jake and said, You know, the most expensive part of our adventures is replacing your lost sunglasses!
They both admitted that their love for watersports had cost them a significant number of sunken shades in the course of their adventures. So they set out to create something new. The Rheos team is based out of the coastal city of Charleston, South Carolina, and the companys name comes from the Greek word re-os, which means river current.
In their mission to create floating sunglasses, they also designed sunglasses with great style, lightweight, and excellent UV protection. Their shades are made for the most adventurous paddlers, fishers, surfers, kayakers, and watersports enthusiasts alive! And if you pay close enough attention, you might even spot a mermaid or two rocking a slick pair of Rheos Gear floating sunglasses!
One thing that also caught my eye when researching Rheos Gear is the fact that they are part of 1% For The Planet, which means they give 1% of all annual revenue to nonprofits that support environmental causes. They are also active in their local Charleston community and regularly partner with local groups to help keep the beaches and waterways of that area clean and pristine!
Rheos Floating Sunglasses Overview
So how are these Rheos Gear sunglasses made? Well, they start with super lightweight frames that make it hard to even notice that these shades are on your face. As someone who has dealt with his fair share of shades that felt like they were squeezing my brain out of the top of my skull, putting on a pair of Rheos Gear sunglasses was a refreshing change in this regard.
In terms of comfort, I think its also important to mention the grippy and padded nose pieces that also reduce any pinching or rubbing against the sides of your nose. These shades also feature anti-scratch armored lenses with 100% UV protection. The lenses are coated for both oil and water protection also boast premium polarization to improve visibility and anti-fog technology to keep them clear in varying conditions.
Reviews For Floating Sunglasses

Im very happy with these sunglasses! They are incredibly light, yet when my 2 year old slammed them on the floor within minutes of me taking them out of the package, they didnt have a scratch or break, which was pretty impressive given that they fell so hard I thought theyd be done for! The tint of the lens is really nice to look through, and is stylish as well. After trying them on and shaking my head around, I felt that they fit great, were incredibly comfortable and lightweight, and they stayed on really well, so Im sure theyll be great for water sports! Ill be getting pairs for the whole family! Definitely recommend this brand, and theyre less expensive, but the same quality, as many of the more expensive floating sunglasses.
Great pair of sunglasses. Very comfortable and lightweight. Floating aspect lives up to expectation.

Your Neighborhood Sunglass Shop
A cool little neighborhood shop opened September 2012 in Mount Pleasant called Shades of Charleston. Its not a chain store, but a locally owned sunglass shop by Charlestonian, Steve Cordina. He came from a large Catholic family who were all competitive water skiers, including his dad, Walt.
Born and raised in Charleston, sunglasses had been a part of Steves life since 1979. The business began while in college when he became one of the founding members of the University of South Carolina Water Ski Team. This team traveled across the Southeast to compete, and when his parents gave him a pair of sunglasses to wear at the tournaments to protect his eyes, Shades of Charleston began to evolve. Competitors would always ask, Where did you get those sunglasses? The brand was Bucci, and Steve quickly acquired the dealership. He set up a small sunglass stand at every tournament to help pay his way through college.
With graduation behind him, Steve made his way back to Charleston with a promising career in sales and marketing, but The Bucci Man kept selling sunglasses out of his home and literally from the trunk of his car. The business kept growing and the money helped sponsor the travel needed to keep competing in water ski tournaments, which later included his two sons, Steven Jr. and Brandon.

Our Customers Say It Best
Without doubt the best eye appointment Ive ever had! Dr. Sunkin was so nice and personable that I almost asked him to be friends. The quality and variety of the frame selection is excellent!!
Independent Optical is the best eyeglass shop Ive ever seen. It has a most unique, modern and upscale inventory from which to choose. In the past, Ive tried every vendor from local optometry offices to Warby Parker. From a quality standpoint, Independent Optical is head and shoulders above its competition. Chris really took time to recommend the best looking and best fitting eyeglasses and sunglasses for me. They are far and away the best Ive ever owned!
Do I Have To Have My Eyes Examined By An Eye Doctor At Lenscrafters To Get A New Pair Of Glasses
We are happy to accept any current, valid prescription from a licensed optometrist or ophthalmologist. You do not need to have an exam with an Independent Doctor at a LensCrafters location in order to purchase glasses. However, it is important to schedule an annual eye exam in order to ensure the health of your eyes.

But How Do They Float
The technology behind this is very simple. And its all in the frames. But first, a quick science explanation. When an object is dropped in water, a certain amount of water is displaced relative to the weight of the object. But if the amount of water that is displaced weighs more than the object itself, the water will sink while the object floats.
The kicker here is that they were able to reduce the weight of their sunglasses while maintaining a durable structure that is designed to withstand the wear and tear of serious outdoor adventurers!
If all that science was a little much for you, check out this great video that further explains the tech behind Rheos Gears floating sunglasses!

What is Cordina Eyewear? Were a premium sunglass company that is built to last. We are a small like-minded family that loves the outdoors and being out on the water together. At Cordina Eyewear we stand behind everything we make with our Lifetime Manufactures Warranty. Everything we make is polarized, because like our grandfather used to say, Why Not?!

What Is The Difference Between An Eye Exam And A Vision Screening
A comprehensive eye exam is administered by an optometrist and can detect not only vision problems but problems with eye health and general health as well. A vision screening is typically performed by a general medical practitioner such as a pediatrician or a nurse. While a vision screening can help identify vision issues, it can miss many important issues that a comprehensive eye exam can identify. This is why everyone is encouraged to get annual eye exams. Schedule your eye exam today!

A Rheos Floating Sunglasses Product Test
I have to be honest that I was a bit skeptical about these sunglasses actually floating when I first got them. Id grown up with Croakies, Chums, and even those super awesome-looking floaties that you can attach to your sunglasses if youre really trying to attract attention!
While I do like to have a strap on my sunglasses, I was kind of sick of feeling like I had a ponytail flopping around on the back of my neck with my old Chums. Thats why youll see the less bulky sunglasses strap in the video below. But all that stuff about straps aside, I had to know: Do the Rheos Gear Sunglasses REALLY float?
And I figured there was no better way to find out than to head down to the Truckee River on a chilly winter day and toss them in! Air and water temperature that day were both in the low to mid-40s, so I was really hoping that these sunglasses would float because I had ZERO interest in hopping in the river to retrieve them if they didnt pass the test.
Is A Contact Lens Exam Different Than An Eye Exam
A normal, comprehensive eye exam will allow your optometrist to determine if your eyes are healthy enough to wear contact lenses. During your contact lens fitting, detailed measurements of your eyes will be taken to determine the right contact lenses for you. There is an additional fee for a contact lens fitting and evaluation for all contact lens patients . Schedule your eye exam today to have all of your questions about contact lenses answered.

Rheos Gear Is Saving Shades
Rheos Gear founder Jake Berton sports a pair of his signature floating shades.
Since launching Rheos Gears first line of floating sunglasses, founder Jake Berton has learned that everybody has a story about losing their favorite pair of shades.
After graduating from the University of Georgia, Berton started a social media agency where he gained insight into growing businesses that would help in starting his own. Seven years later, he sold the company and decided to go on an adventure. Setting off in a refurbished 1981 Airstream, Berton and his now-wife, Becca, traveled from one national park to the next, leaving behind a trail of lost sunglasses. Thats when Berton decided to see if he could solve this all too common problem.
I get a lot of responses from people saying, I remember exactly when I lost my sunglasses. You know because youve got $200 to $300 in a pair, and the second it touches the water, its gone, says Berton. I hear those stories, connect with people, and see if theyre boaters, fishers, paddlers. Did they drink beer by the dock? What brought them to lose their shades?
Admittedly a newcomer to the eyewear business, Berton decided to talk to industry veterans and manufacturers to learn about different materials for lenses and frames. Six months later, Rheos released its first styles in the spring of 2016selling out within 60 days.
